What
is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease which affects sugar metabolism. It occurs
because one of your organs, the pancreas, is not working properly.
When food is digested in your stomach, it is broken down into
glucose (a form of sugar). The glucose travels in the bloodstream
to the cells of your body, providing them with energy.
The
pancreas makes insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose
and other nutrients enter the cells. When the pancreas does
not produce enough insulin, your cells can't get the glucose
they need. The glucose stays in your bloodstream instead of
going into the cells. That's why your blood glucose levels are
high and, as a side effect of this, you end up feeling tired.

What

Type
1 Diabetes which was previously called insulin-dependent
diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or juvenile-onset diabetes, may account
for 5% to 10% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes.
Type
2 Diabetes which was previously called non-insulin-dependent
diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or adult-onset diabetes, which may
account for about 90% to 95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes.
Gestational
Diabetes is a type of diabetes that only pregnant women
get. If not treated, it can cause problems for mothers and babies.
Gestational diabetes develops in 2% to 5% of all pregnancies
but usually disappears when a pregnancy is over.

Diabetes
and Foot Care
Proper
foot care is an important part of diabetes management. In fact,
diabetics are at an extremely increased risk of serious foot
disorders.
Foot
problems are the most common diabetes complication leading to
hospitalization. Ulcers or sores on the foot can be caused by
improper shoe gear that can result in infection and possible
amputation. Studies show that the well fitted diabetic shoes
reduce the development of these ulcers and sores.
